Paul asks…

What should I do with a little english setter which has behavior problems?

Hi everybody,

I got this 4,5 months old english setter from my friend, but he doesn’t know how to train a dog, neither do I , that’s why I started to search for dog training tips on the net. If possible tell me proven methods, and if you want, I put them on my blog -which I started to help to people with the same problem-. Don’t worry, if you don’t want to share your tip on my blog with other people just put a ‘y-o’ (yahoo-only) at the beginning of your answer. :) Thank you for your help.

You can train your dog yourself. It’s not hard, if you take the time to study the methods of Dog Training.

See if you can find the book..Good Dog, Bad Dog, by Mathew Margolis and Eric Seigel..It is an older book, but it has everything you need to teach your dog basic obedience.
I recommend you learn basic dog training yourself, because you will understand your dog better and be able to reinforce the training as necessary.

Need insight into behavior problems for rescue dog?

I really want to adopt a small chihuahua mix dog from a local rescue, but I’m not sure how much of the dog‘s behavior can be shaped or altered with patience and training, and how much is the nature of the breed. The dog is very energetic and doesn’t show much interest in interacting with people. Not hostile, just indifferent. Dog is one year old and has had no socialization with people. Is it unrealistic for me to hope that the dog might calm down with time and training? I have not adopted the dog yet.

You can try to work with this dog, but it will take training, time and patience. There is no way to know how far you can get with it. The dog may be afraid of people so seems indifferent. Scared dogs will often zone out or shut down rather than run away or growl. They seem nicer, but they can be just as scared. Please visit this site to learn how to work with this dog should you decide to get her.

The page on games & exercises has good tips for how to start off with her.

In need of some tips to stop my dogs behavior problems?

I’m having a tough time with leash training my dog. What has worked for you? Can you recommend any resources?

admin answers:

When you start leash training your dog one problem that you will run into is that your dog is not going to like it at all. You will have to spend a good deal of time getting the dog used to the Gentle Leader. It will also appear that your dog is wearing a muzzle. This might give the impression that your dog is aggressive.

But once the dog is used to the Gentle Leader, you will find that the walks are much easier and enjoyable.

Laura asks…

Have you taken your dog to formal training?

I’ve had a number of dogs in my life and I’ve never taken any to training.
I wish I had. I’ve been taking my American Eskimo to training and it is such a big difference.
Those of you who have taken your dog to training, do you think it should be required by law so that dogs with ‘behavior problems‘ may be saved?

admin answers:

That would be a pleasure.

Unfortunately, it’s hard to get pet owners to work with their dogs outside of class and to use what they’ve learned, so unfortunately, a law wouldn’t really help.

Nice thought, and I’m glad you’re getting so much out of the class!

Enjoy – good job!
